How much does it cost to maintain a small business website?

Building the website is one cost. Keeping it running, secure and correct is another, and it is the one owners are most often surprised by. Here is what goes into it and what is reasonable to pay.

Short answer: Industry guides put typical small business website upkeep at about $30 to $250 a month, all in. A simple site can cost much less: the web address is about $10 to $20 a year, and hosting a small site is often a few dollars a month. The bigger cost is keeping the hours, prices and photos right. Website builders like Wix and Squarespace cost about $16 to $25 a month for their basic plans.

What do you pay for to keep a website running?

  • The web address (your domain): about $10 to $20 a year.
  • Hosting, where the site lives: from a few dollars a month for a simple site, more for busy shops.
  • A builder plan, if you use Wix or Squarespace: about $16 to $25 a month for the basic plans, and it includes the hosting.
  • Email at your own address, if you want it: often a few dollars per person each month.
  • Updates and security: keeping software current and the padlock (https) working.
  • Changes: new hours, prices, photos, seasonal menus.

How much is typical each month?

Guides that survey the market put small business sites at about $30 to $250 a month, and $50 to $500 once you pay someone to look after it. Online shops cost more, often $500 a month and up. A one-page site for a salon, plumber or bakery should sit at the low end.

Is it cheaper to do it myself?

In dollars, yes. In time, not always. Doing it yourself turns the bill into a few hours a month of your own, and the job that slips is usually the one that matters most: keeping the hours and prices right, and matching your Google listing.

What does upkeep cost with ohelloo?

A one-page site costs $500 to $900, one time. You pay for the web address and hosting directly, in your name, and we tell you those costs before you decide, so nothing is held hostage if you ever move on. In a package, the website and its upkeep are included: Grow, at $499 a month, keeps a page for each main service up to date every month.

How do I know if I’m overpaying?

  • You pay a monthly fee and can’t say what you get for it.
  • Someone else owns your web address.
  • Small changes, like new hours, take weeks or cost extra each time.
  • You pay for an online shop, bookings or a blog you never use.

Questions

Do I have to pay every month for a website?

For hosting and the web address, yes, though for a simple site that can be only a few dollars a month. Updates can be paid only when you need a change, or included in a monthly plan.

What happens if I stop paying for upkeep?

If you own the web address and the hosting is in your name, the site keeps working; it just stops being updated. Check who owns your address before you sign anything.

How often should a small business website be updated?

Whenever your hours, prices, services or photos change, and at least a look every few months to make sure it still matches your Google listing.
